Shadow Play
Aug 25, 2007

Though I like it warm, especially seen as this summer has been not so great so far), putting up the new washing machine is definitely not recommended^^. Thank god there will be a barbeque tonight :D

And then I come back inside and find yet another comment about a missing shadow on a piece of mine on deviantArt (Greed & Temperance). Introduced by "you've heard that probably before, but I didn't read all the comments"... damn, all the comments wouldn't have needed to be read, just the next few would've done.

I know that some things are off in my pieces (for one thing, there's that hair-smudging-retouching thing I still don't really get - but it's making progress because I know I need to work on it) - but you can believe me when I say I'm past just "forgetting" to place a shadow.

In this particular piece, I tried placing a more distinct shadow under the scepter and it looked unbelievably off. Plus the angle made it fall strangely, too. And the ball at the top gives off some light, which should smoothe it out further - probably not as far as I've taken it, even taking into account the ambient light that seems to be all around that piece (not only coming from the left - if there were none of that ambient light it could never look so bright).

Anyway, the point is: after having told the umpteenth person that it was not an accident, that I didn't forget, that I think it looks better the way it is than the other ways I've tried... they still have to come and tell me for the umpteenth-and-first time.

What bugs me is that this piece works kinda nicely the way it is. The "missing" shadow isn't such a big deal (if I felt it were I would've tried to give it a shadow in the first place - one that might've looked off, but it would've looked better with than without). It feels as if they're just pointing it out to point something out. And that irritates me.

PS: I know some point out stuff cos they're my friends and want me to become better ;) much appreciated there - but I feel kinda stupid repeating myself over and over...
